Notes

Graphics

This laptop utilizes hybrid graphics switch which doesn't work properly yet with Linux. You'll need to stick with the Intel graphics for the laptop to work properly.

Summary

The Dell Vostro 3450 is let down by the issue with hybrid graphics but if you don't care about 3D support then the Intel graphics works just fine.

Both the ethernet and wifi hardware needs proprietary firmware. The latest Debian installer can detect and optionally load the firmware. But it's better to just buy a laptop that can run a free operating system.

Hello

i have installed centOS 6 (64 bit) in my lap top vostro 3450 and my wireless is disable when i do left-click on network connection icon on top-right of my screen. i have updated my kernel and alos probably have loaded some module on my kernel.

out put of ifconfig cm is:

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr AC:72:89:00:34:D5

        BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
        RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
        TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
        collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
        RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

but i get nervous because i can`t connect to my wireless network while i could connnet to it when i had windows 7 - 64 bit.

Hi all,
The hybrid video card in my 3450 with 12.04 Precise drains the battery.
Once it got drainned, the BIOS no more recognized the ac adapter.
I had the machine serviced by Dell, and they changed te female AC connector. That didn't work.
The only way I managed to have the adapter recognized was to boot up into ubuntu, suspend to sleep, after a minute or two disconnect the ac adapter - at this point, the battery indicator in the front panel turned orange (it was always off). Plugging back the adapter puts the indicator in charge mode (bright white)

I installed Pinguy OS, which i think is an Ubuntu/Mint derivative.
It's worked really well, until one day when I touched the button on the keyboard that disables the touchpad. Turns out the effect is permanent, I need to hook a mouse up to it now to move the mouse.

I installed VGA switcheroo, and it seems to work to shut down the hybrid 6630 card, but getting it to run automatically when Linux boots has been dodgy. Sometimes it runs, sometimes it don't. I need to remember to actually run it (in console or GUI) each time I turn on the computer.

Good luck, all.

I am running Archlinux on it and everything is working fine. And after configuring the clockspeed switching (cpufrequtils) the battery lasts considerably longer (I have no video card, just integrated graphics).

But if you want to replace the harddisk yourself then get yourself prepared to take the whole damn laptop apart ;)

Hi,
I have installed ubuntu on vostron3450, everything is working fine except hybrid video card. Have anybody tried debian for this laptop?
Thanks

Michal, 2011/11/21 22:51

Hi,
Ram, it's probably much too late to answer that i have tried debian on the same laptop and got stuck just because of lack of drivers.

But, maybe you've already found a way to install debian ?
I don't like ubuntu and i want to get back to debian whenever it's possible.
Thanks

Im using ubunutu 11.10, everything works perfect, flash, the restricted codecs and hardware, but the computer heats too much and the battery not last for long

Hello! I got Dell vostro 3450, i have installed linux 10.04 on it, and wireless network controller does not work even after system update. I updated also the drivers, wi-fi does still not work.
