The ethernet controller does not function with kernel versions older than 2.6.18. It uses the sky2 module.
For the easiest install for the Fujitsu Lifebook S7110 you should use a Linux distribution with kernel 2.6.18 or greater, such as Fedora Core 6. With an up to date Linux distribution this laptop work well with Linux.
Discussion
I'm running xubuntu 12.04 and the cpu fan almost all the time works at fun speed
Did you experiment such beahaviour ?
THX
Regards
Sorry … not fun but full speed !
With 640 GB HDD: Runs with Linux “ubuntu 10.10” INCL. installed WLAN-Card “out off the Box”
Works Perfectly. I run the latest Mandriva release (2009) on it. The panel buttons work out of the box too (although I don't actually use them).
The video thing is due to the intel graphics chipset (I believe). xrandr –auto always brings it up when I give a lecture!
Lovely light and fast laptop.
I have also my S7110 with Ubuntu 8.04. Everything works but the videos. I have not found why so far.
Almost Works Great
(Further to my comment below) Actually, sorry, there was two small hiccups which still don't work - the shortcut buttons above the keyboard have never worked and I don't know how to fix it and also switching to a projector screen is buggy.
Works Great
I bought this laptop last year, immediately wiped Windows Vista and did a clean install of Kubuntu 7.10 and since then have switched to Ubuntu 8.04. The hardware all works great with Linux (which I checked out before I bought it).
