Notes

This wireless controller in this laptop does not have any native drivers for Linux so you will need to use the ndiswrapper module. For installation instructions, you can view our Configuring the ndiswrapper module guide. The windows driver to use with ndiswrapper can be found here. There are some experimental modules available for this card which are available here. At this time these drivers are still under development and may not be totally stable.

Summary

The main issue with this laptop was the configuration of the wireless controller. Other than that there were no problems in getting this laptop working when used with an up to date Linux distribution. It is recommended to use a Linux distribution with kernel version 2.6.16 or greater, such as Fedora Core 5 or Ubuntu 6.06.

That's my Laptop, But my RAM is: 480mb(512mb). My dad said that this Laptop can fit up to 1gb. I have 2 Operating Systems are installed in one disk drive (C:\), Windows Vista and Ubuntu. And I also have BitDefender Rescue Disk installed on C:\. My Ubuntu can use Local Network, but can't use WiFi network, it says: firmware missing. How to get the firmware? That's my question. Thanks =)

Has anyone been able to install the newest versions of Ubuntu (or even LinuxMint) on this? My uncle has an old Compaq Presario M2000 with WinXP and it's pure crap. He gave it to me to try to fix for him and I'm having problems. I guess he had problems with the built-in wireless and got a Linksys notebook adapter. It connects to networks but can't access the internet. I was screwing around with disabling and enabling the other network connections (that aren't even used) and finally got the internet working on it but if you turn the computer off and back on it goes back to the same problem: Connects to the network, can't access internet.

After screwing around with it all last night with no success I decided to attempt to replace the OS with Linux. I tried Ubuntu 10.10 and Linux 10. Before I try one of my older Ubuntu discs does anyone know if Ubuntu 10.10 or Linux 10 should work? I try booting into the live DVD and it takes forever to show anything and the most it will show is the wallpaper. Nothing else loads.

I also have Linux Mint 10 installed on a 4GB USB drive and I tried to boot it from that. It actually showed desktop icons but none of the panels.

I'm getting close to just giving up and giving him the bad news that he's going to have to get a new computer. This thing is driving me crazy. I don't want to have to tell him that though because he's out of a job right now and can't get a new computer until he gets a job but he was hoping to use the computer to go online to look for jobs and submit resume's.

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 on my presario m2000 and it is VERY slow. The mouse skips around the screen when moving the pointer. Desktop effects won't enable. When I try to turn it on in appearance, it says searching for drivers for about a minute and then it gives the error (desktop effects can't be enabled). Do you think that this is the best it will get?

Thanks!

I wish to disable tapping while using Linux, as I have disabled it in Windows, but I don't know what to do to accomplish this. Anyone have advice for me?

pae

Gonna take a shot at 8.04.

cpy61, 2009/02/02 12:17

btw, incase you couldnt fine your xp driver i can send you mine. But whatever driver you used in xp should be no problem, though i encountered some xpdrivers that dont work at all.

cpy61, 2009/02/02 12:15

I have installed ubuntu 8.04 on this laptop and everything worked fine, except for the WLAN. what works after alot of trial and error, is to use ndiswrapper on the xp driver. It creates a linux driver from that xp driver. Now everythings fine, im even using my WLAN to browse the internet now.

Is this with NDIS or the native driver?

marty_b, 2008/03/04 14:02

install experience

I have installd Ubuntu 7.10 on my m200 and it works really well except for the wireless connection. I get a really weak signal and then it cuts out altogether if I move more than 1 or 2 metres away from AP. I am about to try NDIS solution and will let you know how I get on.
