The Ubuntu 12.04 64bit live CD will boot, however the screen remains black. To solve this,
1. boot the live cd with options “acpi=off xforcevesa”
2. install Ubuntu
3. reboot to terminal
4. adjust the display driver in /etx/X11/xorg.conf from “vesa” back to “nvidia”
5. reboot
Ubuntu then will run well on the HP EliteBook 8760w.

Unfortunately, WLAN/Wifi network connections will permanently freeze within seconds, minutes or hours. Remedies, that sometimes work, include rebooting, deactivating/reactivating the network or the Wifi. However, this problem seems not to be specific to this notebook as I have experienced the same Wifi freezes in Ubuntu/Linux 1104 and 1204 with both of my notebooks (Toshiba Qosmio, HP Elitebook) and with two more differing notebooks that I dont own (Acer). In all these circumstances Wifi/WLAN operated without freezes when driven by MS Windows (Win 7, Vista). “Freezing” means that the network manager will still say “connected” while network/internet accesses by Firefox, Thunderbird, Synaptic or even ping will fail and timeout.
