Notes

Tested with openSUSE 12.2 (Gnome) with the i5-2450M (Intel HD 3000 graphics), everything works just fine. Installation was straightforward without any complications. Having this machine for few weeks, I haven't discovered anything unpleasant.
Even elsewhere quite common minor glitches, like not turning off webcam led indicator or not changing the wireless status indicator, are not present here.
This computer has models with a dedicated GPU. It works but the switching between the dedicated and integrated cards does not work so battery time is affected. The dedicated GPU can be disabled in bios.
The ralink network card has linux drivers but not for current kernels. Avoid ralink cards.

Summary

HP ProBook 4530s works very well with Linux if you use integrated graphics and dont have the ralink wireless card.

I was having trouble getting grub2 with Debian to function correctly until I disabled fastboot in the BIOS. It would attempt to boot but freeze after “Loading ramdisk”. This could be an issue specific to this model or it may have to do with my SSD and/or partition setup. Anybody else experience this?

Added info about VGA and HDMI output, both work fine

Tahir: I ran Scientific Linux 6 with no problems few times, and SL is basically just slightly modified RHEL, so it should run fine.

openSuSE 12.2 Graphics, hibernate etc works out of the box. Brightness volume control works. Using KDE4/KDE3 desktop. Haven't tried/needed the fingerprint reader so don't know if it works or not. Also I haven't tried the VGA and HDMI output so I can't verify do they work or not.
