Performance

The NVMe and HDD are nice:

blondie ~ # hdparm -Tt --direct /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing O_DIRECT cached reads:   936 MB in  2.00 seconds = 467.25 MB/sec
 Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 418 MB in  3.00 seconds = 139.31 MB/sec

blondie ~ # hdparm -Tt --direct /dev/nvme0n1

/dev/nvme0n1:
 Timing O_DIRECT cached reads:   2502 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1251.44 MB/sec
 Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 4682 MB in  3.00 seconds = 1560.42 MB/sec

Summary

I installed Gentoo on it easily. The main trick was getting the NVME driver loaded (BLK_DEV_NVME).

The most obscure things was getting the LED keyboards lights to work stevelacy/msi-keyboard-gui. It has a nice gui, but needs node.js to work. For a simpler command line tool
written in C use: msi-steelseries-led

The sound is a bit tricky, but this seems to work for me:

CONFIG_SND_AC97_CODEC=y

CONFIG_SND_HDA=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_HWDEP=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP_MODE=1
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_HDMI=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=0
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CORE=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE=64

The Bluetooth is on the USB bus, and I needed this config:

BT=y

The SD card reader is on the USB bus, and needs this config:

MFD_RTSX_USB=y

Not worked on the Nvidia 970M.

I have tested kernels 4.4, 4.7 and 4.8. On some boots not all the devices will be detected. A reboot usually restores the missing devices. Even after a good boot sometime a simple 'lspci -k' will crash the laptop, worst on 48. Not compiling/building the nouveau drivers seems to solve tthe 'lspci -k' thing.
