Notes

Tested with 3.7.1-ck self-compiled kernel under Arch Linux

Plus, it seems that the AMD A6-4455 APU mounted on this laptop max frequency is blocked to 2.1 GHz because the APU has the two boost pstates disabled. Some guy managed to enable these pstates under windows, reaching a max frequency of 2.6 GHz. I'm investigating for do the same job on Linux.

The website is amd.com, not and.com. That is the website for and processor.

I had only one problem with my samsung np535u3c with Ubuntu 14.04. Resume after a suspend gives a blank screen. After several months, I got the problem solved. The solution is go to and.com website, follow the link 'drivers..' in the menubar, select linux catalyst driver download it, unzip it (around 120mb file) follow the instructions correctly, reboot. Now suspend works perfectly. Great. I think there is slight problem with brightness.

Very hard to set up dual boot of win8 with 12.04 (or any other OS). First disabled secure/fast boot, then booted from USB and installed 12.04 and grub. Those worked fine, but now windows won't load. Using Boot-repair (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair), my laptop was almost bricked. Grub was invisible after doing a fix and the other boot options (UEFI or CSM) visible in the BIOS setup did nothing, not even booting either windows or ubuntu alone. Reinstalling or updating grub from the live CD did nothing. Luckily I could get windows back by recovering to factory settings and resetting secure/fast boot in the BIOS menu. Maybe some of you fixed this? If so, I'd be grateful to hear your solution.

All I can add is that I had exactly the same experience on exactly the same laptop except I bricked mine and it went back to the mothership. I opted to enable UEFI and boot only to a Lubuntu install 13.10 (same pretty much as Ubuntu. Before doing this I did a P2V using VMWare utility and now run Windows 8 on a VM on top of Lubuntu. Lubuntu not as pretty as Ubuntu but much faster and Windows is licensed to run on my machine. I use it rarely :-).

The early models have UEFI issues and are likely to brick. Update bios firmware first! The version I use is “Update Software (Firmware) ver.1.0.0.3 - Windows 7 / Windows 8 (MULTI LANGUAGE, 2.12 MB) 2012-05-11”.

I never had bricking issues but dual boot issues are common, Microsoft seems to hate grub. Reinstall grub after updating Microsoft, boot repair and bcdedit in MS Windows is needed (see boot repair procedure).

Ubuntu 13.04 seems to work out of the box for the brightness buttons (3.8 kernel). After enabling hibernate this works as well. Suspend comes back with a black screen but adding

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“acpi_osi=Linux”

to grub solves this. But acpi_backlight=vendor kills my brightness buttons so I did not use that.

I used D's 'Wifi after Suspend' tip as well and have a working system now with suspend and hibernate (thanks D!).

Hi, I've summarized my hints here, fixing a few issues noted above.

NP535U3C A03NL, 500GB 4GB RAM. Can confirm networking problems after suspension on Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10. Very annoying for I did not find a way to get a connection back other than reboot. 3D won't work on standard available drivers. Did not test other sources. Bluetooth has a patch error on Ubuntu and won't work.

Linux Mint 14 has the suspension problem as well but allows the interface to be enabled again. Bluetooth works on Mint.

Fn-F12 does not work (nor do F1 and F11) on either system. I tried series 9 keymap settings (on 12.04) but this resulted in an unusable system. Contrast keys work sketchy on Ubuntu but have no effect in Mint. Fullscreen 1080 youtube playback seems a bit better on Mint.

According to various sites it should have a 24Gb SSD cache but I cannot find this disk in bios or fstab.

John, 2013/03/17 22:28

I just spotted the HDD above, this needs correcting:

HDD Not Work

Does work and works well, in fact both on Ubuntu and Mint this is a usable system.

John, 2013/03/21 21:47

Fixed the brightness adjustment (http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3951) add acpi_backlight=vendor to grub:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor”

sudo update-grub

Linux Mint 14 has the suspension problem as well but allows the interface to be enabled again.

Well, hibernate does freeze the network ports until shutdown. Suspend allows reactivation.

535u3c ssd 120GB 8B RAM - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 12.10 problem after suspension network interfaces (LAN/WLAN) dont up. Mini VGA port instaled but special cable form Samsung are nessesery (not tested). 12.10 problem fsck after upgrade from 12.04. Ubuntu Unity 3D working onli with Beta AMD catalyst 12.11 at this moment.
