Toshiba Satellite P50-B

Introduction

There are a few variants of P50 or P50-B Toshiba laptops which differ among other things in used display (4K or just FullHD) and graphics card (nVidia or AMD). This is entry for P50-B-10V (part number PSPNUE-00W00KCZ) with FullHD display and AMD graphics.

Linux Compatibility

DeviceCompatibilityComments
ProcessorYesWorks. Some features can be enabled/disables in EFI setup (e.g. switching off Turbo reduces temperature under load).
ScreenYesWorks. Bightness can be controlled through function keys, at least in Xfce, not sure about console.
HDDYesWorks.
Graphics ChipYes Intel works. AMD (tested only fglrx) works with driver version 14.9 (most up to date at the time of writing) and kernel 3.10.X. With newer kernels, driver installer was unable to detect card and refused to continue. I did not try different (older) driver versions as support for R9 M200 series of chips was added in 14.9. Also kernels are supported only up to 3.15.
HDMI OutYesBriefly tested video, seems to work.
Optical DriveYesTested just reading, works. Some P50 variants have Blu-Ray, not this one though, just DVD.
SoundYesWorks with kernel 3.10.58. With kernel 3.10.17 sound played only through jack to headphones/external speakers.
MicrophoneYesWorks.
Headphone PortYesWorks.
Microphone-In PortNot Tested
EthernetYesWorks.
WirelessYesWorks with kernel 3.10.58. With kernel 3.10.17 card was not detected.
BluetoothNot Tested
USBYesWorks, even boots off of USB3 flash drive.
Card ReaderYesWorks.
WebcamYesWorked out of the box with Skype.
KeyboardPartialI switched F keys to act as F1-12 and automatic keyboard backlight off in EFI setup. Some Fn+something combos seem not to work (volume control), others do work (brightness, keyboard backlight on/off, touchpad on/off, WiFi on/off).
TouchPadPartialRight button seems not to work. More precisely, touchpad buttons seem to be actually just one button, making touchpad so called clickpad. It's possible to define which areas of clickpad register as left/middle/right mouse buttons when pressed though, see link in notes.
Suspend/ResumeNot Tested

Notes

Tested with Slackware 14.1 (with stock 3.10.17 kernel, but recommend compiling 3.10.58, see issues above).
Boots in EFI mode with ELILO. With Syslinux, it boots but hangs when X starts (I even flashed EFI/BIOS to newer version). So, in case of weird issues, it may be worth trying CSM (legacy) mode. Update and correction: the issue is not related to boot loader, but anyway appears to have been fixed by updating to fglrx 15.12.
For Synaptics clickpad configuration, see Arch wiki
Cases when wireless card is not detected with some kernel versions are very likely caused by missing firmware. Unload iwlwifi module, load again and see dmesg output; the module will complain if it can not find matching firmware version.
Cases when AMD graphics card is not detected by proprietary driver installer with some kernel or driver versions may be caused by radeon (open source) driver. Unload (or blacklist and reboot) radeon module and run installer again.
